There is a New Year’s tradition in state parks all over the country. It’s called “First Day Hikes” and many are offered in Florida State Parks.
Maybe you put on a few extra pounds over the holidays. What a perfect way to work them off. The hikes in Florida are usually easy walks on trails in the state parks, most led by a park Ranger. They are typically short, about two miles or less, and not strenuous.
Make sure to carry water and wear sunscreen, and a wide brimmed hat. Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers are recommended. Flip Flops are a bad idea.
For a list of First Day hikes, visit the Florida State Parks website.
While most of the First Day hikes are in state parks, there are also hikes frequently by the chapters of the Florida Trail Association. You can connect with the chapters on the association’s website.
If you live in South Florida, there are many hiking trails in Everglades National Park.
Whether you’re part of an organized group, or just getting out with family and friends, start the new year off on the right foot (a shameless pun) and get out in nature in some of the wild places Florida has to offer.
Happy New Year from Florida Unplugged.
